Abstract

The author had carried out study on pathological changes of testis in rabbits following total body irradiation with 900r of x-rays. The following results were obtained:
1) The survival dates of the rabbits after iiadiation were 7 to 15 days and the average day was 10.5 days.
2) Most of the tests showed a marked reduction in weight and, the more destruction of germinal epithelium of the seminiferous tubules were present, the more loss of weight of the testes was observed.
3) On histological examination, the seminiferous tubules revealed a varying degree of atrophic change. Among the cells of germinal epithelium, spermatogonia were the most susceptible to x-ray damage with early disappearanve.
Spermatocytes were next most severly damaged and spermatid and spermia showed least damage. No pathological changes in the interstitial cells as well as Sertolic cells were demonstrated.
4) In the lumina of the tubules there were many degenerated masses, bizarre cells and multinucleated giant cells, particulary in the case in which the destrcutive changes of testis were remarkable.
